When we talk about basketball, we think of Pau Gasol. When they mention tennis to us, we highlight Rafa Nadal and when the topic is Formula 1 Fernando Alonso is always on our minds. However, athletes such as Ángela Sosa, Amaya Valdemoro or Marta García do not have the deserved recognition despite being icons in their respective sports.

In this post we are going to talk about women’s teams. That marginalized sector of sport, many times, little valued. But little by little he is managing to gain a foothold.

What are the female teams that currently reign in Spanish sport? You most likely don’t know as we have barely heard of her accomplishments in the media. These are the best teams in the 2018/2019 season ended:

Soccer: Atlético de Madrid Women

Atlético de Madrid have won four leagues, of which three have been consecutive. The last four years they have been finalists in the Queen’s Cup, and in 2016 they took the title.

In their ranks they have Ángela Sosa and Virginia Torrecilla, two prominent midfielders who are regular in the Spanish squad.

The team holds the record for attendance at a women’s football club match since March 17, 2019, with more than 60,000 spectators. It was also a participant in the second game with the highest attendance of women’s clubs as a visitor, in the quarterfinals of the Copa de la Reina in San Mamés, with about 50,000 spectators.

Basketball: Avenida Perfumeries

Perfumerías Avenida has won the Women’s League 6 times, and has been runner-up 10 times. They have 8 Queen’s Cups and have reached the final 6 more times. Last year they won their eighth Spanish Super Cup and the fourteenth Castilla y León Federation Cup.

It is also noteworthy the fact that three players from the Salmantino team, Maite Carloza (Base), Silvia Dominguez (Base) and Andrea Vilaró (Guard) are among those called up for the Spanish team.

Handball: Rocasa Gran Canaria

The women’s handball team Rocasa Gran Canaria won the league for the first time last season 2018-2019. In their record they have two Copa de la Reina championships and two Super Cups. It is also worth mentioning that they have been runner-up three times in the league, twice runner-up in the Queen’s Cup and once runner-up in the Super Cup.

Water polo: Astralpool CN Sabadell

The Astralpool CN Sabadell has no more and no less than seventeen leagues and fifteen Copas de la Reina. Furthermore, last season the team was proclaimed European champion for the fifth time in its history (2010-11, 2012-13, 2013-14, 2015-16 and 2018-19).

The Spanish Super Cup for women’s water polo is a water polo competition between Spanish clubs that is played in a single match between the team that wins the League and the winner of the Cup from the previous season. The Astralpool girls have 10 titles.

Laura Ester Ramos, Judith Forca Ariza and Maica García Godoy are the players who have been selected in the last call for the Spanish team.

Field Hockey: Country Club

The Club de Campo team won the Iberdrola League last season 2018-2019, achieving its twentieth victory. It also has fifteen Copa de la Reina and seven players, Begoña García, Belén Iglesias, Maria Lopez, Beatriz Pérez, Alejandra Torres-Quevedo, Carmen Cano and Candela Mejias, currently playing with the Spanish team.
